Marine Biology, Ecology and Conservation

Observing and mapping the abundance, diversity, movements and distributions of marine species to understand the function of marine ecosystems and how these change over time. Performing laboratory and field experiments on organisms or communities to understand the mechanisms that drive change. Modelling biological processes, populations or species distributions to predict the outcome of future scenarios.

Marine Chemistry and Biochemistry

Detecting and quantifying the presence and toxicity of various chemicals and compounds, from anthropogenic (e.g. hydrocarbons, PCBs, heavy metals), or marine derived (e.g. Harmful Algal Blooms) sources. Mapping the prevalence, and investigating the environmental consequences, of plastic pollution and litter, eutrophication, deoxygenation, and ocean acidification. Modelling the transport, distribution, transformation and impact of chemicals and contaminants. Assessing water quality. Discovering marine biochemical products and metabolites. Measuring climate relevant compounds and gases; VOCs, ozone, CO2, methane, DMS(p).
