These challenges define where SMSRC focuses scientific effort and partnership capacity.

CH-01

Climate Change

Quantifying, mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, and on the human communities that depend upon the Ocean.

Why this matters

The marine ecosystems we study are at the forefront of climate change, already experiencing extreme baseline conditions: very high temperatures, salinity, and naturally low oxygen levels. Small changes have the potential to push ecosystems beyond tolerance limits, causing coral bleaching, habitat loss, and declining fisheries. Acidification weakens calcifying organisms, while hypoxia reduces survival rates. These impacts directly threaten coastal communities reliant on fisheries and marine resources, making precise monitoring and region-specific adaptation essential for sustaining both ecosystems and human well-being.

Water Quality and Pollution

Identifying and reducing the sources and impacts of poor water quality and marine pollution to improve Ocean and human health.

Why this matters

Limited water circulation, high evaporation, and dense coastal development concentrate traditional pollutants such as oil, heavy metals, and plastics, plus emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, noise and artificial light. These stressors degrade habitats, disrupt the function of ecosystems, trigger harmful algal blooms, and compound climate impacts like hypoxia. Fragile ecosystems have little capacity to recover, making contamination more damaging and persistent. Effective monitoring and pollution control are essential to protect biodiversity, fisheries, and the coastal communities that depend on clean, productive marine environments.

Biodiversity Loss

Understanding, managing and reducing the drivers of marine species and habitat loss to protect and restore marine ecosystems and biodiversity for the benefit of people and nature.

Why this matters

Regional marine ecosystems, and the biodiversity they support, are highly vulnerable due to extreme environmental conditions and intense coastal development. Key pressures include habitat destruction, overfishing, pollution and climate stress, which together accelerate coral reef and seagrass decline. Limited ecological resilience means recovery is slow once damage occurs. Yet still the fundamental structure and function of marine communities in this region are poorly understood. This knowledge is needed to provide effective management—through protected areas, sustainable fisheries, and habitat restoration—which is critical to preserve ecosystem services, support livelihoods, and maintain the natural heritage upon which both people and nature depend.
