Carsten Wolff

Delivering world class marine facilities to support observations, analysis, and experimentation.

I am probably best described as a multidisciplinary scientist: One of my many hats was initially taking part in coral sedimentation effects studies and then marine invertebrate taxonomy (to UK NMBAQC and Australian AMIT standards) - I have most extensively worked with sponges, ascidians and minor phyla - but cultivated over the years applied expertise in microbiology, aquaculture, genetics/multiomics, cell culture, benthic ecology and bioactives for drug discovery, and deep sea biology, and also business development, field programs, ecology, surveys, scientific R&D engineering, logistics, remote area work, line management, science innovation strategy/senior leadership, etc; i.e. all the things that make research come together in the first place and become successful.

My personal interest arose from school-holiday summers by the sea and then perhaps from a literal, (and littoral) interpretation of a quote attributed by Sir Isaac Newton: "I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me". I was hooked by the allure of the yet to be discovered worlds, initially also led by the pioneering Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Hans Hass documentaries, and the need to learn to understand these places. I built my first underwater camera with my dad’s help when I was 11, I think, and a first ROV when I was 18, and have been on and under the sea ever since.

Career Milestones

May 1995-Dec 2008

Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS): field collection lead and main curator of Biodiversity-Biodiscovery Collection - marine invertebrates, algae, microbes, DNA, extracts & compound library – collected and/or curated 16.000 specimens from over 5.000 taxa, undertook 1.400 dives (incl. 66 dives in Antarctica) 1.300 days at sea; the research and collaboration with pharma and agritech companies led to at least eleven patents and several preclinical trials.

Oct 2014 – April 2022

Vision Environment: R&D manager; Biodiversity surveys, marine environmental engineering, adaptive environmental monitoring, data telemetry, business development; e.g. conceived and managed the technological scope of New Zealand’s largest dredge monitoring program (16 buoy and benthic stations, 4 year , >95% data integrity maintained during COVID).

Technology Innovation Institute Abu Dhabi (TII)

Executive Director, environmental biotech - Biotechnology Research Centre: Co-led the design and build of the new Centre in Yas Bay, Abu Dhabi, which only took 2.5 years: We set up 49 laboratories, half to GMP standard; I personally hired and led 22 expert staff in our team of 63. Together, we set up many UAE firsts: Examples include building the best NMR (800MHz and 400MHz) suite, and the only gene synthesizer in the UAE, but I am most proud of us having assembled an amazing, likely irreplaceable, international team with a unique skillset in the ME.
