Dr. Akbar John is an associate professor in the field of marine science and aquatic biology at the Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre (SMSRC), University of Khorfakkan, United Arab Emirates. He has contributed over 140 research papers and authored four books. His research focus is on population genomics, marine biodiversity and conservation and pollution management in light of achieving sustainable management goals. Being a member of IUCN SSC, he has established a global biorepository on extant xiphosuran in collaboration with 20 institutes of high learning including National University of Singapore, US geological survey, and more. His contribution is recognized globally by the Indianapolis Zoo as he is listed as one of the top 10 finalists for the emerging conservationist award 2023. Currently he is working on an endemic species biorepository in the UAE towards achieving sustainable long term fishery management in this region.



"I am dedicated to bridging the gap between advanced genomic research and sustainable marine conservation. Building on my global work with xiphosuran biorepositories and my recognition as a 2023 Indianapolis Zoo Emerging Conservationist finalist, I am now focusing my expertise on the unique ecosystems of the United Arab Emirates. I am currently exploring the genomics of marine organisms within UAE waters to better understand their resilience and ecological value. My primary objective is the establishment of a comprehensive Marine Genome Repository at the Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre to support long-term fishery management. I believe that complex environmental challenges require collective action and diverse expertise. Therefore, I am actively welcoming new collaborations and strategic partnerships to translate these genomic insights into impactful conservation strategies."
