Patrick Joyce is a marine biologist whose research explores how global environmental change shapes marine ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on coastal communities and habitat‑forming species such as shellfish. His work seeks to understand how multiple stressors including climate change, biological invasions, pathogens, and marine pollution, interact to influence the structure, function, and resilience of marine ecosystems.
A core theme of his research is the study of species interactions across multiple levels of biological organisation, ranging from predator–prey dynamics to host–microbe relationships. In recent years, his research has increasingly focused on characterising the structure and functional roles of microbiomes associated with marine organisms, and assessing their importance for host health, disease resistance, and ecosystem functioning. In parallel, he is particularly interested in how environmental change and anthropogenic pressures influence the emergence, spread, and persistence of antimicrobial resistance in marine and coastal environments.

Patrick’s research integrates field‑based sampling, controlled laboratory experiments, and molecular and ecological approaches, drawing on interdisciplinary expertise spanning marine ecology, global change biology, and molecular microbiology. Through this multidisciplinary framework, his work aims to improve understanding of how changing environments alter host–microbe interactions, and to translate this knowledge into insights relevant for aquaculture sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and the long‑term health of coastal marine ecosystems.
In addition to his research, Patrick places strong emphasis on mentoring students and early career researchers, with experience supporting undergraduate, postgraduate, and early-stage doctoral researchers in research design, data analysis, and publication. Through hands on supervision and collaborative research, he is committed to fostering independence, confidence, and professional development in the next generation of marine scientists

Prior to his appointment as Assistant Professor at the University of Khorfakkan, Patrick held a Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at University College Cork and previously undertook postdoctoral research positions at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Aqua). His research career has been strongly international, reflecting a commitment to collaborative, globally relevant marine science.
